My Favourite Television Show You’ve Never Heard Of: Homeland

We’re branching out from shows that feature good looking boys in suits today. Much as I like to stop and admire the, ahem, scenery sometimes (ok, most of the time), I promise you that I actually can be a grownup, even one who is engaged in global issues and current affairs.

Homeland tackles the very global, and very current, topic of national security. We’re taken inside the CIA, and around the world Ito Iraq, and back home to a familiar-seeming suburban household… and nothing turns out to be what you thought it was. I love this show so much on so many levels, but I’ll try to state my case in a concise, logical, (and grownup! don’t forget grownup!) manner. Here we go:

The acting is unlike anything else you’ve seen on television. Damien Lewis, Claire Danes, and Mandy Patinkin (Mandy Patinkin! That man deserves his own post one of these days) all give incredibly layered, nuanced performances that bring complicated characters to life. You might not always agree with or approve of their actions, but you always, always want to see what they’re going to do next.

The storyline makes you think. I like escapist entertainment as much as the next girl (obviously) but that doesn’t mean that I don’t want my eyes to be opened and my worldview to be challenged once in a while. The writers of Homeland do all that and more, Every. Single. Episode.

The drama. The drama! Oh my gosh, you guys, when was the last time you watched the season finale of anything and had knots in your stomach the entire time?!? Honestly, the entire time. Italics don’t do justice to the tension I was feeling over that last hour and a half. The way that the season’s plot threads were brought together and then… and then… I won’t say anything else. If you’ve seen the finale, you know what I’m talking about. If you haven’t, then for goodness sake catch up! That way we can start season two together in the fall.

Homeland airs Sundays at 10:00pm ET on Showtime. Season Two starts September 30th!

Wouldn’t you rather spend time with this guy…

… than this guy?!?

  1. I am not sure whether to say thank you, or be ‘mad’ at you – this show sounds like something I would love [why am I not surprised! 🙂 ] and now I have to add it to my DVR! Each year I TRY really hard to not add shows to my TV lineup, and I seem to fail every time. This time, though, it’s your fault! 🙂

    • Hahaha oh, I hear you! I felt the same way when I first started watching Dexter way back when…and more recently, Suits and Political Animals (which will be featured here soon). It’s the same reason why I haven’t gotten into Aaron Sorkin’s new one yet. There’s just no time!

But I love, love, LOVE hearing smart people tackle engaging topics they’re passionate about, which is why I spend far too much time with the shows mentioned above and will likely add The Newsroom to the list sooner rather than later. Thank goodness for digital TV!

  2. So I guess I’ll have to be frugal somewhere else and add Showtime to my television, huh? Oh, yes, Mandy Patinkin over Tom Hanks anytime! Ever see him (MP, not TH) in Dead Like Me?

    • Or you could just stream the episodes online after they air…not that I’d ever advocate anything like that, of course 😉

I never got into Dead Like Me! Should I be adding it to my list?

      • Mmmm, unsure. I love it, but SO hates it. You might try it once or twice to see….geez, now that I think of it, it may not be on anymore. I watch it on one of those channels that shows dead series too. Does that make it redundant?

      • Haha no, that makes it awesome. Meta-awesome, even. I can think of a couple of places where I might be able to find the episodes, so I’ll check it out and report back!

    • Right?!? Will probably be featured again once season two starts and Saul and his Peanut Butter Jar of Sadness are back in my life on a regular basis.
