My Favourite Television Show You’ve Never Heard Of: Defiance

Good morning! And welcome to Thursday. I hope your day’s off to a great start!

Do I sound like I’m in a better mood than I was yesterday? Well, my friends, that’s because I am!

It occurred to me last night that getting back to my regular routine doesn’t have to be all bad; after all, one of the things I can get back to is My Favourite Television Show You’ve Never Heard Of. We haven’t featured one of those in a while, because even though I’m in love with as many fictional characters as ever, I’ve been spending Thursdays at my online home away from home lately. But like I said, getting back to my routine can be a good thing!

So here we go: today’s Favourite Television Show You’ve Never Heard Of is Defiance. You’ll have to excuse me while I geek out a bit here; Defiance is a brand new science fiction series, and you guys, it is so cool!

Here’s your quick spoiler-free synopsis: In the not too distant future, Earth’s landscape has been altered by an inter-galactic war between seven eight unique alien races. Everyone has to learn to co-exist and survive together in a brand new civilization – oh, yeah, and figure out how to not get killed by the other mysterious aliens who seem intent on destroying their settlement.

But that’s not even the coolest part! Check this out:

Each week, viewers will follow an immersive character drama set in the boom-town of Defiance, which sits atop the ruins of St. Louis, MO, while in the game, players will adventure in the new frontier of the San Francisco Bay area. The dramatic tapestry of the series and the intense action of the game will exist in a single universe where their respective narratives will inform one another and evolve together into one overall story.  – “Defiance” website

This is Joshua Nolan. He’s a wanderer in the lawless badlands of a dangerous new world. He also thinks it’s cool how technology is changing the way we consume our entertainment as a society.

Holy bananas. An interactive viewing experience that moves seamlessly between two different media platforms to provide viewers with immersive entertainment that can be uniquely customized to suit their individual preferences? Don’t you just love how technology is changing our concepts of entertainment and blurring the boundaries between producers and consumers and shifting creative ownership of material?!? Doesn’t it make you curious and energized for the future of the entertainment industry and creative minds everywhere? *amb pushes her communication geek glasses back up on her nose*

My point is, you should watch “Defiance”. All the cool kids are doing it!

    • Teehee!! I try to play it cool but the truth is I will always be a geek at heart!

One of the things I love about sci-fi in general (and this show in particular) is the way it uses fantastical, futuristic settings to explore current social issues. Different social and ethnic groups with conflicting opinions trying to co-exist … hmm, sounds familiar …

Plus, there’s like cool alien make up and special effects and stuff 😀

    • Bahaha – story of my life – if I put as much thought and care into the rest of my life as I did into organizing my tv viewing schedule, I wouldn’t be such a hot mess in the mornings!

  1. Yes, you do sound like you’re in a better mood. And no, I’ve never seen Defiance. Two for two so far! I haven’t been watching much TV lately, but what I do watch in the precious time I have at my disposal is usually something interesting, like The Walking Dead. Defiance, sounds interesting. I might actually catch this show the next time I’m looking for something to stream. Thanks for the recommendation!

    • My bad moods tend not to last too long … I suspect it might have something to do with the amount of chocolate and coffee in my diet … natural endorphins, right? 🙂

I know just what you mean about wanting to save your free time Jack! A lot of what I watch are “background noise while I blog/cook/do the dishes” shows, and only a select few make it to the “drop everything and pay attention” level!

I haven’t gotten into The Walking Dead yet, although one of my best friends is a fan. Would you recommend it? Should I add it to my list?

      • I would recommend it with all my being! It’s one of those shows that stay with you a long time, much like AMC’s Breaking Bad. The show is almost like Lost with lots of things happening with the characters. In the middle and close to the end of the season, someone always bites the bullet. Great show, Amb!

      • Oooh, now you have me intrigued! I was a huge fan of Lost, all the way through to that divisive series finale. I just love complex, interconnected storytelling like that.

I will add this to my queue and report back once I’m a few episodes in 🙂

      • Jack! Stop that! I stay up past my bedtime too often as it is … fine. If I get hooked on too many shows and watch through my usual blogging time, I expect a guest post from you to fill the void! 😉

  2. lol–I’m the first female commenter today, amb. Interesting… Glad if you’re feeling more up. I’m still getting my feet wet with Dr. Who so will sit this one out and look to you as my Defiance and Cool Kid expert. (which would make you a defiant cool kid–whoa)

Love this phrase: “Holy bananas. An interactive viewing experience that moves seamlessly between two different media platforms to provide viewers with immersive entertainment that can be uniquely customized to suit their individual preferences?” Gorgeous and beautifully crafted–you ARE a professional 🙂

    • That is interesting! It’s the sci-fi/gaming angle, maybe? Or the fact that I’ve taken a break from my usual Thursday swooning for a change? Whatever the reason, I’m always glad to chat with new folks 🙂

And of course you know I’m always glad to chat with YOU! Goodness, what a nice comment that was. Every once in a while I lapse back into academic writing mode, and it’s lovely to hear that you appreciate it! Thank you! *amb pushes her communication geek glasses up on her nose*

Off to get you a certain soup recipe! Hope you’re having a fabulous day my friend!
