Only in Canada, Eh?

Canadian flag on rocks

Happy Canada Day !!!

As promised, I’m taking a break from my very strenuous holiday schedule of hitting the golf course (I don’t play, but I look cute in golf clothes and make an excellent lucky charm if you’ve got an upcoming match) and going to the movies (hello, Henry Cavill!) to pop by with a very special post for you today.

I want to share some of my favourite things about the True North Strong and Free with you. After all, there’s a lot more to us Canucks than being able to use up all of the “u”s on our Scrabble boards! Here’s my list of the top things that Canadians can proudly take credit for. If I’ve missed any of your favourites, be sure to share them in the Comments!

  1. Happy birthday, Canada šŸ™‚ Am off to google Butter Tarts. They sound dreamy. Perhaps we should join up tomorrow for a joint bday celebration for both US and Canada since there seems to be only one day between these birthdays. Go figure. And many thanks for bringing smarties to the world–the sucker version is my fave, though not as easy to find as the mini rolled candies.

Off topic: Have you read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society?

    • butter tarts most definitely yum. And very Canadian it seems. So am hearing that today is July 1, not July 2 as I’ve been thinking up until just now (it’s almost 1:30 p.m.). Am obviously on vacay and not up to speed. So. Two days between our nations’ respective bdays. OK, then. Let’s celebrate on both šŸ™‚

      • Sorry, got a little distracted there. Yes, let’s absolutely plan a joint holiday for our bdays !!! Love the idea of a double celebration. Hope your holiday is going well, my friend, and I can’t wait to hear all about it once you’re back with a full time internet connection !!! šŸ™‚

      • YOU are Juliet. Was going to insist you read it if you had not.

Modem was fixed this a.m. so I can once again waste time. Up to 1975 Dr. Who. How goes your golf game?

      • Back to the club today, but for lunch only. And before you ask – a salmon burger and sweet potato fries. Very tasty! šŸ™‚

(And thank you very much re: Juliet. You’re so sweet!)

      • hey, nice coins šŸ™‚

not being sweet with the Juliet reference (though you’re welcome)–there were just so many parallels: she asked the guy to marry her (not that you’ve done it, but I’ve heard you threaten šŸ˜‰ ), funny name with Oscar Fingal O’Flahertie Wills Wilde (yours if you want it as I only write about food), sweet nature but willing to defend herself, funny as all get out, fiercely independent, lots of Jane Austen references, a writer, and so on. Also from an earlier time, and I’ve heard you say you would’ve done well then. You’re her, she’s you.

      • Aw, Liz! You’re making me blush. I love Juliet; if some of her humour and feistiness comes out in me too, then I am one happy girl.

LOVE Oscar Fingal O’Flahertie Wills Wilde – thank you for the inspiration !!!

    • Ah yes, the twoonie! (For those of you outside of Canada, the “twoonie” is our two dollar coin! Here’s what it looks like: twoonie Canadian two dollar coin

And we have a one dollar coin too, and yes, we call that the “Loonie” šŸ™‚ Here’s what that one looks like: loonie Canadian one dollar coin

  2. Amb…

Smarties, Anne of Green Gables, Cirque, Michael…all favorites and I did not know!

Happy Happy Canada day to you – love that you are off having a splendid day looking cute and being entertained!

So, what about Canada Dry Gingerale and tonics? Marketing myth or truth?

Speaking of being entertained, Kiddo and I watched Pitch Perfect this last weekend and omg..I love that movie. I must learn how to sing, that was just too much fun!

    xo bon

    • So glad that I could (re)introduce you to some old favourites, Bon! Michael is practically a national treasure. I mean seriously – that voice!

Thank you very much! It’s been a wonderful day, and tomorrow will be Tuesday already! Hooray!

I do love Canada Dry Ginger Ale, but I have to confess I’ve never had them with anything more exciting than orange juice. I’ll have to do some research on that one – will keep you posted! šŸ™‚

I am SO HAPPY that you and the kiddo liked Pitch Perfect!! Yay!!! Big smile on my face right now – makes me feel like I was right there with you for movie night šŸ™‚ xooox

  3. Nanaimo bars? Toques? John Candy? Cory Monteith (of Glee fame)? Rick Mercer? Insulin? Really, once you get going, it is really impressive, what Canada has contributed to the world! Thanks for getting us going, Amb!

    • I love every single thing on this list!!! Thank you Karen!

And you’re absolutely right, once we get going … I mean, we could do an amazing list of musical talent alone: Feist, Kathleen Edwards, Blue Rodeo, kd lang, Carly Rae Jepsen, Diana Krall, Paul Brandt, Jarvis Church, Hawksley Workman, Great Big Sea … šŸ˜€

      • I just found out recently, Oscar Peterson! Canadian.

You can make a song “Prairie Girl” kind of like a Weird Al version of Zappa’s “Valley Girl.” Be a hit! But there’s probably no distinctive lingo, so scratch that one.

  5. Reblogged this on words become superfluous and commented:

A reblog of last year’s Canada Day post. I was going to come up with 130 more things (it’s our 147th birthday today!) but the backyard and my all-Canadian playlist (Feist… Serena Ryder… Oscar Petersen – what? I contain multitudes, you guys) is calling. I hope you’re all having sunny days and I’ll see you back here on Thursday! xo amb.

I'd love to hear what you think!
