Under the Covers with Amb

Good morning, you gorgeous creature. I’m so happy to see you! Listen, you’ve been good all week, and it’s cold outside here anyway, so why don’t you blow off whatever you were planning to do today and spend time with me under the covers instead? You know we’ll have fun!

I promise you, what’s going on here today isn’t nearly as scandalous as it sounds. Just because I’m developing something of a reputation over at The Blog of Funny Names doesn’t mean I have a completely one track mind, you guys. Today’s post was partially inspired by the Canadian Broadcasting Company, for crying out loud.

See? Perfectly PG. Mind you, I could probably do something with that “Everywhere Music Takes You” line … but I won’t.

One of the things I love about blogging – aside from the friends, and the fun, and the flirting – is that ideas for post topics are often no more than a click away. I am so lucky to be surrounded by such creative minds in this little corner of the internet; Truly, you all inspire me more than you know. Neil, John, and EJΒ are just a few of the writers I follow who are featuring music on their blogs, to great effect. (Today’s post is partially inspired by you boys, too).

Back in the early days of this blog, when I was new to the WordPress scene and hadn’t met many of you yet, Andrew used to stop by on Fridays with playlists to listen to. I’ve been thinking about reincorporating music into our regularly scheduled programming around here for a while, but wasn’t sure of the best way to do it. And then it hit me: when it doubt, shamelessly copy the CBC!

CBC Radio Two airs a feature on weekday mornings called, yes, “Under the Covers with CBC” which spotlights, yes, musicians covering the songs of other artists; and yes, we are totally taking this idea and running with it.

So. From now on, if it’s Thursday and we’re not talking about one of my Favourite Television Shows You’ve Never Heard Of, we’ll be talking tunes. I haven’t decided yet if we’ll cover strictly covers (sorry, couldn’t resist) or if we’ll branch out beyond that, and would love to hear your input in the Comments.

In the meantime, here’s our inaugural cover, perfect to bring the mood right back to where we started this morning, I think. Me-ow.

I hope your day is just delicious, and I hope to see you here tomorrow for WoW Friday!

love amb

  1. the world is a better, happier place with more music posts such as yours πŸ™‚ we need to keep tab of all the songs and musical pieces we love. and that is the beauty of

  2. Amb!
Just too great…all of it. And this song, oh boy, this song. You know it gets me! I love this idea and beyond the fact that I love music, and adore your choice with which to debut your new Thursday track (see what I did there?!) with this particular song, well, I’m relieved that on Thursday Tune days, I won’t fall yet farther (further?) behind on the list of TV shows that I must watch because Amb told me to. (How’s that for one long sentence?!) So, bravo my friend, on all accounts! Xo

    • Bon!
I’m so happy you like the new feature! I hoped you would – and yes, I was confident that you’d approve of the song selection of the day πŸ˜‰ I have you to thank for introducing me to that one in the first place! So really, you should be getting an “executive music producer” credit around here πŸ™‚

I heart your long sentence, and your enthusiasm, and you. Thanks so much for popping in while you’re on vacation, your visits just make my day!

    • … life is more fun when it’s set to music. (I’m not sure if this split comment thing you started was on purpose, but I like it!)

Glad you like the new “programming” around here. Especially since I’ll likely be coming to you for song suggestions in the future! πŸ™‚

  3. Love the idea! Magnificent song choice, too. You know I’ll be looking out for this segment each week. And it may not kick off my morning, but it sure makes coming home in the afternoon that much sweeter. Top job as always, Amb! πŸ™‚

    • I’m glad! You’re partly responsible for it, you know. πŸ™‚ I’ll do my best to keep the mystery and excitement alive in our relationship so that you’ll keep coming back!

Until we can figure out how to manipulate space and time to suit our needs, I think I’ve figured out this time difference. You’re just over half a day ahead of me. So my morning right now is your late evening … I think. It’s after 11pm where you are, right?

      • Oh, I’ll keep coming back! And you’re bang on, 100% correct. Almost midnight here now. Wow, that’s a fair time difference. I’m crawling into bed as you’re getting out if it. It’s like I’m a night-shift worker. No fear, I’ll keep working on the whole space and time thing…

      • EJ – this is a sign of how our relationship is progressing already – when I’m with you I understand math. *swoon*

It’s totally like you’re a night shift worker! I’ll start leaving dinner out for you before I leave in the mornings πŸ˜‰

      • Hehe. πŸ˜€ Math understanding is always a sure indicator that something unusual is going on.

Oh, you’re such a sweetheart. It is true, the way to a man’s heart, is through his stomach. As if I wasn’t already enamored!

      • Hey, I have to do what I can in the comments section, since I can’t keep up with your posting schedule. Two posts today? After three yesterday?!? Holy bananas. You’re a man on a mission, and I love it!

    • LOL!!! Girl, you crack me up. Tune in any time, you know I’m always happy to see you here! And even if you are surrounded by boneheads, I know you’ll be brilliant πŸ™‚

  4. do you think classical artists also have “covers”? like mozart et al. i love listening to cbc @ work… but for some reason, we’re so behind with the browser that i can’t blog at work (atrocious!) and a lot of other things don’t work right. i’ve taken to listening to the zoomer radio station classical 96.3… i’m officially old people.

OH BTW!! a hedgefund manager bought steinway pianos. I KNOW, right!!! that’s just wild. 1. i wish i had that kind of money. 2. the ticker symbol for steinway is LVB. get it? ludwig van beethoven!

and i really needed this. really. most comically bad morning. stupid cheddar left a stain.

    • You want officially old people – 96.3’s sister station, AM 740 – now that’s officially old people. In between Perry Como and Rosemary Clooney tracks they have gardening tips. I LOVE IT. You and me baby – we can be old together !!!

That’s a brilliant idea about classical music and I’m going to check that out! I know for sure there were some pop songs in the 60s that covered it … you can’t tell, but I’m humming Beethoven at my desk right now …

LVB for Steinway is the best thing EVER. You just made my morning πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

  5. oh yea! so i was thinking about checking out their sister station. it sounds absolutely wonderful. maybe that’s what i’ll listen to, on the way up to riding tomorrow! and gardening tips sound brilliant! i so need those. my garden has been invaded by bucky: he climbs in and nestles with the catnip and in the process, kicks off the other stuff *facepalm*

all genres! i wonder if you could find bollywood stuff too….. have you heard of a classical hybrid brand named bond? i wonder if they still produce music or not. their stuff is really nifty. i got their cd when i was in hs sometime.

i think that’s so clever. ah the little things in life πŸ˜‰

    • The mental image I just got of Bucky snuggling with catnip is priceless. You should take pictures!

I haven’t heard of Bond, but will be googling them and making a new at work playlist on my lunch break! Sounds like just what I’ll need to get through the afternoon.

      Yes, exactly πŸ™‚

      • there is one. i’ll email it to you.

really good stuff! i need to get my ipod or something here so i can play my own stuff too… i kind of miss my own play lists.

btw, i stained my white shirt, again. i had a giant vegetarian burrito for lunch. i also ended up with burrito all over my face, arms and desk. what.an.err.in.judgement.

  6. One just cannot NOT smile when listening to this kind of swing. And I can’t sit still, either – just gotta sway. It’s a perfect start to your new Thursday scheme, Amb – hard to tell whether the TV shows – which I love and which I usually have heard of – hmmm – or the music is better, but I have an inkling that the music may win for me.

Thanks for getting my Thursday back on track!

    • Karen!! I love that we each posted about music within a couple of days of each other – how fun is that?! I agree with you, it’s impossible to sit still when this kind of tune is playing. Of course, Adam’s Levine’s lovely face may have a little something to do with it, too πŸ˜‰

I am so glad your Thursday is back on track – rock on, my friend !!!

      • Well, yes – Adam is very easy on the eyes AND the ears. πŸ™‚ Good choice all around, I think! And the music connection is wonderful. I love these kinds of coincidences because they always make me feel like I am in the right place – in this case, with you! Thanks again!

  7. Okay, Amb, I have to admit something. When I read your title, you know exactly the first thing that popped into my head. Well, thankfully, the post didn’t progress in that direction. Whew!

Anyhoo! Love CBC Radio! I grew up with it, and I’ll never forget it for its love of jazz and news. This is a great cover by Adam Levine. I’m looking forward to your Thursday lineup, sounds like a lot of fun! πŸ™‚

    • Why Jack, I cannot imagine what you could possibly be referring to! It’s not like I use innuendo around here to get my readers’ attention or for comic effect, or anything πŸ˜‰

I love CBC Radio as well. Have you ever listened to the Vinyl Cafe? That’s my favourite of their programs, hands down. I own the christmas album and make everyone I know listen to the story “Dave Cooks a Turkey” at least once every December πŸ™‚

Thanks for the encouragement about Thursday programming, I’m excited about it as well!

  8. wow–this one got a few comments πŸ˜‰ lol–brilliant with the “under the covers” thing. I had a reply in, but it was being sent while we were driving up the north shore and there wasn’t enough connectivity to get it through. Ah, well. My incredibly witty thoughts are lost forever now–haha. Said something along the line of “brilliant” per my opening here and also that I hope you don’t totally stop with the TV as I learn so much from you with those posts. Also, my vote is to cover more than covers as, once again, I’m counting on you to keep me up to speed, especially as my daughters get older.

Gotta say that I’m with Princess on this one and will take Tony over Adam. Am for sure too old for all of these up-and-comers.

We were a mere 39 miles from the Canadian border (though not sure how aligned I was with where you are) and I gave a wave. Ironic that I was closer geographically than usual, but you were out of touch via mobile wordpress. Music note: We spent most of our time in Duluth, which is a big music city at least locally. Trampled by Turtles and Charlie Parr both started there. Would love to go back someday for their Bluegrass Fest, but I bet it’s nuts.

We have Canada in our vacation sites, so I’ll get as as far north as you someday πŸ™‚

    • Yeah, just a few comments eh? It’s the scandalous sounding title; gets ’em every time πŸ˜‰ So sorry to hear that your original brilliant thoughts were lost to the airwaves forever my friend, but so appreciate that you took the time to check in and comment while you were on vacation! So fab to have you here along for the ride, as always.

Not to worry, I’ll be alternating between tv and music on Thursdays, so I’ll do my best to keep you up to speed on the entertainment that your girlies will be talking about πŸ™‚

Thanks for the wave! Lovely to know that we were geographically close, if only for a brief moment or too. How awesome that you got to spend time in such a vibrant local music scene! That must have been great.

Would absolutely love it if you got as far north as me!! And one of these days I’ll have to make my way out to St Paul , too πŸ˜€
