WoW Fridays: Douglas Adams

I have to kick things off today with a big shout out to the wonderful and well-readΒ Ariadne, who helped inspire Words of Wisdom Fridays in general and today’s Words of Wisdom in particular. Let’s just jump right into it, shall we?

“I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.”

– Douglas Adams

I love this quote. First of all, let’s face it, “whooshing” is just fun to say. But second of all, I love how Adams is able to take the structure and sensibilities implied by a word like “deadlines” and turn it on its head, and infuse it with fun.

Don’t panic. It’s just a deadline.

I feel like that’s what happened around here this week, too. Not that we operate under deadlines in the strict sense of the word, but there are definitely schedules to be followed, and this week, they were definitely … not. And look what it got us! Awesome playlists. New readers to connect with.Fun Shutterbug stories.

I’m never quite sure what we’re going to talk about week to week, but IΒ amΒ quite sure that it wouldn’t be nearly as fun leaping from one thing to the next if you all weren’t so willing to jump along with me.

So a big Superfluous thank you to everyone who stopped by this week when things didn’t go quite according to plan .. and then came back the next day anyway. I’m so glad you’re all along for the ride!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone! I hope you get the chance to whoosh past some deadlines of your own!

love amb

    • Thank you, my friend, you too! I can’t believe it’s the end of August already and I’m so glad we’re finally getting some decent weather!

  1. whoooooshhhhh… I do like the sound of that! And what fun to turn it on its head, to borrow your phrase, and make it playful to miss deadlines πŸ™‚ Fitting quote for the season and responsibilities in general as it seems a lot has whooshed overhead this summer.

Your Don’t Panic graphic is cute as can be, which reminds me that I forgot to mention how much I enjoyed your Lego/Back to the Future car image a few posts back. Cracked me up. (that “deadline” whooshed by me, too)

Good luck with any all all deadlines today and onward. Happy Friday!

    • Doesn’t it just? I can’t believe that we’re at the tail end of August already. What has happened to this summer?!? Just crazy.

Isn’t that little dude cute? He’s from the poster for the movie version of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, which I haven’t seen and really probably should. I’m so glad you liked the legos, too! I just found them by chance when I did a google image search for “Back to the Future”. Who knew?!

Well thank you very much! My boss is away today, so I’m hoping my deadlines will behave themselves. Happy Friday to you too! πŸ™‚

  2. That quote is amazing!! And for me, this quote means “be relaxed but mindful of our lives, and enjoy!!”. So letΒ΄s enjoy our weekends!! Yay!!
Thank you so much for the mention, Amb!! πŸ™‚

    • That is such a fantastic interpretation of that quote, I just love it! “Relaxed but mindful” – what a great perspective to have.

And yes, yay for the weekend! Bring it on !! You are so welcome for the mention, my friend. I hope you enjoy your weekend as well πŸ™‚

  3. Thankfully I haven’t had to hear that depth-charging whooshing in a long, long time. I suppose I’m either doing something incredibly right or have my priorities all messed up. Maybe I need to hang with those folks who talk a lot but end up doing squat? LOL I don’t know, all this zombie stuff flooding my brain lately has made Jack a happy boy! πŸ™‚

    • I’m glad! Nice that all those hordes of brain-eating undead can bring you such joy! πŸ˜‰

I always find it fascinating to hear how different people handle deadlines and schedules and the like. You sound like you’re one of the organized ones! What’s your system? Me, I’m a list girl – if it doesn’t get written down on the list, it doesn’t get done!

      • That’s how I do it. Lists and gumption to stick to it. I wouldn’t be blogging three times a week on a rigorous schedule if I didn’t have that nagging feeling to get it done. Other than a few odd occasions, I write my posts weeks in advance. This way I can move posts around to catch trends as they happen. For instance, that Fighting Zombies post became a massive entry after I had planned it around WWZ’s premier weeks in advance. But yeah, I have a plan with everything I do and it’s all written down. Stay tuned! πŸ˜‰

  4. “Whooshing” IS fun to say. I very much like the playfulness of this quote. And deadlines and schedules be damned. Spontaneity is the spice of life!

I know I said before that variety was the spice of life, but, uh… there are many spices. Yeah, that’s the ticket…

  5. Oh, this week just feels like it whooshed right by…so whizzing fast, but full of interesting moments πŸ˜‰ A few deadlines missed, but nothing that can’t be recovered on Monday!

That quote just makes me giggle…it makes me have this image in my mind of deadlines speeding by on a scooter, wearing a little helmet, laughing as they pass by. See ya!!

Love all the fun and surprises on your blog this week; spontaneous fun is ALWAYS a good thing in my book! Have so much fun in the sun…can’t wait to hear all about it!! xoxo

    • Deadlines wearing a helmet !!! Officially my favourite mental image of the week. Thanks for that one, Bon! Brilliant!

So glad you had fun this week – you know things are always more fun for me when you’re here πŸ™‚ Will try to chat with you from the lake if I can! xoox

  6. Whooshing kind of reminds me of hootenanny. Because of the “oo”s and the fact that they’re both so fun to say. And when deadline whoosh by, I like to have a little hootenanny. “Whooshing hootenanny.”
    Hehe. Oh dear.

  7. Great quote.

I love the movie poster. Alan Rickman is the voice of the robot. His scenes are hilarious. I think you would enjoy the movie if you get a chance to watch it.

    Have a great weekend.

  8. I love Douglas Adams. I’ll never forget the time I went to Chicago to meet my then girlfriend’s Mom (who ended up becoming my mother-in-law). I was reading the Hitchhiker books while I was out there, and when I got home, two books were missing. For the longest time, I thought her Mom stole them…

  9. Again – loving all of the coincidences that make your blog resonate with me, Amb. Honestly – we (my boys, their friend and I) were JUST talking about HGG two days ago! What are the odds, with all the amazing books in the world? And I, too, love the ‘whoosh’ of deadlines, and Alan Rickman’s voice (yay, Marvin!), and the poster, and the books… and you, for bringing them to my Friday night. Happy weekend!

    • No WAY. Were you really Karen?! That’s amazing!! What are the odds is right!! How awesome. I hope your Friday night was wonderful and your weekend was too!
