Under the Covers with Tegan and Sara

Well hello there! Thanks for joining me Under the Covers this morning. Lovely to have you here, as always.

In addition to kummerspecking, I’ve been listening to a lot of music lately. Specifically, a lot of music by non-conformist, boundary-breaking, independent and just plain awesome chicks. It makes me feel more adventurous when I’m updating my spreadsheets in Corporate World. Sometimes I get really daring and colour code things with more than black and white.

I know, I know: I can hear the tiny violins playing too. I’m grateful for my job and all of the opportunities and benefits it provides, really, I am. I love that I’m able to live in the pocket-sized place! But you know me … black and white’s not really my style. Have I mentioned lately how glad I am that I have all of you to chat with during the day?!?

Anyway, back to the tunes. One more thing that I’m late to the party for: I’m completely obsessed with Lorde’s new album, and with this song in particular:

Lorde facebook

Hi, Lorde! I love you. And your hair. And I’ll probably be talking about you at the Blog of Funny Names tomorrow, too. That’s not awkward, right?

It’s been on repeat the entire time I’ve been writing this post. I feel cooler already. But I just threw that in there because if it’s stuck in my head, I figure it should be in yours, too; it’s an original work and isn’t today’s cover.

Today’s cover is by Canadian sister duo Tegan and Sara. I heard it on the radio while we were at the cottage last week, and it’s stayed with me ever since. A very unusual take on a rock classic – even if it’s not your cup of tea, you have to give the girls credit for taking on The Boss in the first place!

Is there a song that sticks with you long after you’ve heard it? It doesn’t even have to be one that you like, necessarily – just something that gets stuck in your head. Tell me all about it in the Comments! If we get enough of a conversation going, I’ll put together a special-edition Friday playlist for us to celebrate the end of the week tomorrow!

love amb

  1. I’m actually surprised I like Tegan and Sara’s cover but I really, really like it. Definitely going on my iTunes. (And I’m obsessed with Lorde’s hair, too!)

    • That’s awesome! I’m always happy when I can help add to someone’s music library. I recently got a new laptop and the thing I was most worried about was transferring all of my mp3s. Never mind the photos and other documents! Priorities, right?!? πŸ˜‰

PS so glad I’m not the only one who feels this way about Lorde’s hair πŸ™‚

  2. that is a different take on Bruce! But why not? She sings it well. Love her voice.

You should find yourself an Office Max (do they do Canada?) as they have a great sale on colored Sharpies this week–pastels, neons, and bolds πŸ˜‰

I’ve been listening to a lot of Chic Gamine lately πŸ˜€ But the one song I just can’t chase away is Evacuate the Dance Floor. The video isn’t my thing, but she has great hair.

    • There’s two of them, actually! Sisters. But their voices blend so well together that they sound like one person sometimes. Neat eh?

We don’t have Office Max, but we have Staples, which sells the same gear. Not sure if they have the same sale schedule, but I will look into that – the thought of neon Sharpies is making me feel better already πŸ˜€

Will be checking out Evacuate the Dance Floor shortly and will report back!

  3. Oh goodness! Lorde is so talented. I’m so impressed with her. I’ve been listening to that song on repeat a lot lately and it definitely makes me feel cooler.

As you know, I just got back from sunny beaches and I’ve had this song stuck in my head quite a bit. I don’t speak Spanish so I’m not sure how that works, but whatever.

    • Right?! When I was 16 I was doing … well, not that. πŸ˜‰ And this is only her first album! My goodness. I have a feeling that she’s going to be around for a long time.

I know! I loved that picture on your blog – made me feel all tropical. Will be checking that tune out and keeping the tropical feeling going all day (at least until it’s time for my afternoon PSL πŸ˜‰ )

  4. I really like the cover by Tegan and Sara. I’m really enjoying all the music you’ve been sharing.

Since I’ve infected you with all of my show tunes recently, I’m not sure what other songs may be lurking back there, other than my dad and I have been trying to outdo each other with our renditions of “Old MacDonald Had a Farm”. I’m not sure my husband was ready for that one. Or anyone else for that matter. πŸ˜‰

    • Are you? I’m so glad! I love selecting tunes for all y’all. πŸ™‚

I will happily get infected with your show tune virus! Symptoms include speaking to the back row and jazz hands!! (Waiting for Jack to jump in and turn this into a zombie thing … he’s inspired, I can tell πŸ˜‰ )

  5. Skinny love by Birdy, haunting, sad, I think it’s about two people too afraid to show their love…

I love Dancing in the Dark, I can remember seeing Bruce Springsteen in my late teens in Melbourne, an amazing concert!

    • I’ve never heard this song before – it’s lovely Jenn!! Haunting and sad, yes – but beautiful. Oh, I’m so glad you shared this one. ❀

In other emotional news … I'm crazy jealous that you got to see Bruce !!! He's on my concert bucket list, for sure.

  6. Okay – an “almost brush with greatness” moment – my sister’s partner’s nephew was the guitar tech for Tegan and Sara for two years – including on their world tour! Really! I had not heard this before, though, and I was not sure what to think – it is gutsy to take on The Boss, for sure. But they are very cool – unique sound – and this grew on me as I listened. Thanks for sharing, Amb. πŸ™‚

    • Now THAT is cool! I can’t imagine what kind of life that would be like – touring with a band around the world. I bet he’s got some great stories!

I felt the same way Karen – I wasn’t sure what to think of this one at first either. The tone of the girls’ voices is just so opposite from The Boss in every way … but the more I listened, the more I liked! πŸ™‚

I'd love to hear what you think!
