Under the Covers with The Be Good Tanyas

Good morning! I’m keeping things short and sweet today because I have to focus on the important tasks of staying warm and resisting the urge to chuck Corporate World and all its trappings for a hut in the Caribbean. If I could keep my wi-fi and my connection to you Wonderfuls, I’d be out of here today!

They look like polite Canadian girls, but the BGTs will sing whatever they darn well like, thank you very much!

But I’m still here. And still cold. So. After our conversation about our conversations with the universe yesterday, I decided to tempt fate a little bit with today’s cover song. I mean seriously – how bold do you have to be to take on a Prince song?!?

Today’s song: “When Doves Cry” originally by Prince, covered here by The Be Good Tanyas

I’ve listened to this song a few times now, and I still can’t decide how I feel about it. Do you like it? Do you hate it? Tell me why in the Comments!

If you’re one of my US readers who can’t view the original video, try the one below and let me know if you have any better luck:

love amb

    • Oh, my friend, so many things. My love of cable television and indoor plumbing and vanilla soy lattes, for starters 😉 I could handle a hut getaway, for sure, but I am a city girl through and through.

      • I get it. 🙂 I used to be a city boy (Manhattan, Seattle, D.C. and San Diego). The creature comforts are, indeed, appreciated. And now I live in a former (yet still dusty) Spanish horse village in the U.S. desert Southwest. Go figure.

  1. They don’t seem to hit the groove till around 1:45. Then it’s good!

I didn’t realize how good this song was till I heard the Romeo and Juliet version.

  2. ‘video not available in your country’ – all i could pull up on the screen. guess i will have to listen to others’ responses to form my opinion. go to the hut, i would highly recommend it. )

  3. totally want to catch this video, amb, Prince being a Minnesota boy and all. He was key to my “coming of age” with the Purple Rain movie, the Time, etc. D@mn he was hot. lol.

Sorry about the cold weather and CW pressures. Am at the inlaws now and a high of 45F has me dancing in the streets (well, it was a slow jog but that’s still good) and sleeping until 9 a.m. You’ll just have to think back on that Florida vacay to get you through. Friday is within view so keep on keeping on.

    • Prince is like some sort of ageless purple alien, I think. He was on an episode of New Girl after the Superbowl and it’s like he hasn’t aged at all. He’s magic! 😀

Thank you! And I’m so glad to hear that you’re getting sun and sleep on your spring break. That sounds awesome! And you’re right, Friday is definitely in view 🙂

  4. Prince covers are always good! When Doves Cry by Patti Smith, Nothing Compares 2 U by Sinead O Connor, Kiss by Tom Jones, even the Foo Fighters’ “Darling Nikki” wasn’t bad.

But…. “Sorry, this video is not available in your country.” is the note I got from the YouTube video. Time to do some detective work!

    • I wasn’t sure if you’d approve of other people appropriating The Purple One’s work or not – this is good information to have when I’m putting together your mixtape 😉

  5. Hope the weather warms up soon for you! I’m in the same boat as the rest of my American brethren, no available in our country. 😦

Since I saw Prince perform this song live in concert, I’m now dying to hear it.

    • It is pretty chill, isn’t it? I was doing some reading and saw that a lot of their songs are used in various television shows. I can see why – they totally have that “setting the mood without overpowering the story” thing going on.

I'd love to hear what you think!
